A reminder about fair use and content aggregation

I’m building several new “clearinghouse” projects that aggregate short excerpts from online content with the goal of driving traffic back to the source. So, I went back to revisit the Fair Use provisions of U.S. Copyright law. Here is a good summary.

“The 1961 Report of the Register of Copyrights on the General Revision of the U.S. Copyright Law cites examples of activities that courts have regarded as fair use … summary of an address or article, with brief quotations, in a news report …

“Copyright protects the particular way an author has expressed himself. It does not extend to any ideas, systems, or factual information conveyed in the work.”
